Mac Release!
Well, sort of! This week marks the launch of Foreign Legion: Buckets of Blood for the Mac. Needless to say, we’re super excited about all of this! We created a game in only a matter of months, and today a handful of online distributors are selling our game (with more and more distributors joining them soon). The response so far has been great, but what are you waiting for, though? Go on and get the game already!
With the things we’ve learned from this release we’re steadily preparing the PC version for a near-future launch. Right now we’re in the process of making the game play nicely with Steam (and all its beautiful features). As you can imagine however, its quite a task on the programming side of things. Luckily our programmer Sander is really pulling through and making things happen. I think we have a well earned vacation coming up soon.
As we firmly believe in supporting our community we’re already planning the future updates of our game. These updates will be completely free and will include additional content to Foreign Legion. We’ve got some cool things in the works and hopefully we’ll be able to tell (and show!) you about these really soon. If you’ve got a crazy cool idea that could work within our game, feel free to make a comment or .(JavaScript must be enabled to view this email address)!
Sadly, there might be some confusion about the Mac version being sold right now, though. Some websites advertise that Foreign Legion will only run on an Intel based Mac. If you are still using a PowerPC based Mac however, fear not! The game is a Universal Binary and will work on any Apple, big or small.
By the way, if you are still thinking of a reason not to buy Foreign Legion? Its got chickens. They explode.

Nice game! Cannot manage to change weapon though :/ Mousewheel doesnt do anything.. I use a logitech v470 bluetooth mouse. Is there a way to fix this? Kinda difficult playin it all by the pistol :P
By iENDE on July 4th 2009
I found out that on macbook pro the only way to change weapon is through the trackpad. But then the mouse movements are desactivated.. And even if you desactivate the trackpad when the mouse is connected the mousewheel doesnt work.
By Merlijn on July 4th 2009
Hey iENDE, thanks for your comment!
I’ve read a few things about other users having the same problem. Have you tried or are you using USB Overdrive? Setting up a profile for Foreign Legion within USB Overdrive might solve the problem.
We will be looking for a way to fix the problem in a next update, though.
By Luke on July 4th 2009
Great game! Got the demo off of apple.com. In the full version are there more maps? If not, will more be added in future updates?
Btw, the game runs very smoothly on the “Good” setting on my MacBook. Any higher and it gets a bit choppy.
Thanks for the game!
By Merlijn on July 5th 2009
Hey Luke, thanks for your comment!
We’re definitely looking into adding more levels to Foreign Legion. In fact, we were playing around with some cool ideas last week, so hopefully we can show and tell those in the near future!
By Mark on July 17th 2009
Love the game! I don’t know if this will throw your whole concept over board and probably it’s too much trouble, but how about adding a first person view? I know that alot of people prefer 1st person over 3rd person. Just a thought. Again, great game. Cheers.
By Myles on July 18th 2009
I’ve just recently picked up this most excellent of games and am enjoying nearly every minute of it. This despite not typically being fond of more action-based games or regenerative health. The visual style is especially pleasing.
As for additional content largely what comes to mind are levels. While what is included with the existing game is perfectly reasonable as it is I’m always greedy for more. I would also like to be able to fire through wire fences. I must have spent two clips in an attempt on one chicken. A very curious experience at the time.
By The Legionnaire on July 19th 2009
Great game! This alongside The Path, ah, how I love Belgium.
The dynamic soundtrack is really appreciated. Action games wherein the music is ramping up and you’re simply taking a stroll is bothersome to an impossible degree.

Amazing game!!
cant seem to get my gamepad to have mouse suport on the second joystick? any thoughts!!
thanks again for making games for gamers

Smashing little game! Nice ‘time waster’ when commuting to work with my PowerBook.
Would love to see it developed further, with additional maps and maybe some additional weapon perks, like anti-personal mines, grenade launcher and sniper rifle. Also, a ‘level boss’ would be cool!
I’ll be showing my support by buying the game and featuring it on my blog. Cheers!

Help !
My azerty keyboard isn’t good to play. May be give me a keys config ?
My fucking mouse refuse to switch weapons… give me a key please !
Funny game ;)
For the future I waiting for zombis ;P
By Vert on August 5th 2009
Very fun little game. I do not regret having bought this, I just hope there’s gonna be more maps and maybe weapons. Would be fun to disintegrate with shotguns, or to chop ennemies with a machette etc… anyway for the price I’m still very happy with the game! Good job!
By MongolianMisfit on August 5th 2009
Having seen trailer on steam I made an impulse buy. :) I look very forward to playing it, but I was shocked to learn this isnt a multiplayer focused game. I assumed it was in the same lines as ‘Battlefield’.
So, dont regret having purchased it, just believe this would make for killer multiplayer fun!
By mt on August 5th 2009
Game would have been awesome for multiplayer..
By ErikMD on August 5th 2009
Hey, I just bought your game and I have to say that this is very unique idea… But I’m kinda left feeling a bit empty without any multiplayer component. Granted that might be some of the cool stuff you want to share with us, but I figured id say that some co-op or 5 on 5 deathmatch games would be pretty interesting. Thanks a lot for such a new and fresh idea.
By ((BB)) Jones on August 5th 2009
Very rarely do I come by a newly released game that’s good! Plenty of action and blood. Way to short, could be longer with some other levels. Haven’t played for an hour yet and I already have nine of the ten STEAM achievments!
For iENDE, hit F to change weapons also. |;-)
By Alfredo Garcia on August 5th 2009
Great game, Only have one question. Are you planning on adding multiplayer in the future? My clan and i would love to play this game on the net.. :-) Good job and I love this game :-)

Awesome Game! great game to kill sum time.
Hoping to see more levels and maybe multiplayer! That would really bring alot of people to buy this game.
Ive told everyone i know to buy this game ASAP.
well great game 5/5!
By Torrunt on August 5th 2009
This game looks fun and all but after reading about it in it’s steam forum I’m not so sure it’s worth the money.
There’s not much in it at all, some people finished the game 100% (steam achievements and all) in less then an hour.
But if it’s going to have a decent amount of updates/DLC (free) I might just have to buy it now while it’s on discount.
By KDR_11k on August 5th 2009
I just downloaded the game from Steam and played it a bit. The trailer looked good but the game itself didn’t make a good first impression, mostly due to minor things that should be easy to fix:
- It’s weird how the logo “looks” up and down as you move your cursor, that somehow ends up looking cheap. It would make sense if there was a 3D character standing there and following the cursor with his head (also to the left and right) but with a static logo it would work better if it was just fixed in direction.
- The ingame camera started me looking downward, it generally looks somewhat bad if you point downwards because the camera remains fixed in one place and it seems like you’re looking away from the action, making the camera move up if you point downwards would improve that impression tremendously.
- The death animation looks… stiff. They just get on their knees and stay that way for a while, might look more dynamic if they were thrown to the ground by the force of the impact instead.
- The victory animation… At first I thought it was a glitch or something when the game just paused for a moment and then displayed the “you won” screen when I had just pressed the fire button on the last enemy, a second or two of delay between the final shot and the ending might make it clearer what just happened.
The archievements are pretty trivial but that’s not a real issue IMO (may be improvable by disabling them in lower difficulties though, as it is easy is the best mode for scoring archievements). The one map may get tiring quickly though. Since it’s just a small game and a score hunt replicable conditions might be necessary but I’d like if it had something like the WiiWare game Water Warfare that shuffles some level elements around every game (in this case it could be something like moving the tent and some of the buildings to different spots). The waves also feel kinda samey and the exploders that come from the side are more tedious than difficult to deal with as you can see them on the radar. They might work better if they spawned mid-wave instead of right at the beginning when the player is looking at the radar to spot where the enemies are coming from. As a counter balance to the surprise maybe have them scream while running like the headless bombers in Serious Sam? Those guys were hilarious.
I’m also a bit confused about what kinds of kills are the best score-wise and when you actually start losing civilians so a manual might help the game.
By Exportforce on August 5th 2009
Funny little game.
Just got it via steam and it looks real fun, since I love games with senseless brutality.
The Idea with the chickens is cool too, also the chicken in the ass of the one dead soldier made me laugh, how stupid it does look out there like “OMFG how the fuck did I get in here”.
All in all it’s real fun, but you should release way more and bigger maps.
This could also be real fun as a coop game if the maps should get bigger.
Also maybe releasing a leveleditor would help you in reaching other parts of communities too, maybe even build in mod-support. This is one of the best ways for indie games to reach high levels.
Also I like the idea of the different enemytypes, like the suicide bomber, where you can shoot his package.
keep up the work, and really… KEEP it up and show us what you’ve got ;)
Will even do a small review soon on http://www.bloodpatches.net
By liam on August 5th 2009
Hey got the game off steam today, lot of fun.
Some new levels would be cool, id also like to see a shotgun :P
By KDR_11k on August 5th 2009
Well, ideas that could work with the game… I find the basic gameplay a bit dull at times since most enemies either run up to the town hall or just pop up and down like whack a mole targets, could use a bit of variety in the regular shooting.
Having some waves come with extra conditions like artillery bombardement (shells drop on your position a few seconds after a warning signal, if you don’t get out of the way between the signal and the impact it hits you badly), SCUDs (fly straight towards the town hall entrance in an arc across the town, shoot them down to make explosives rain at enemies below), tanks (simply drive into town and shoot at the player), etc would be one way.
Another would be temporary challenges like “score only headshots in this wave” or “kill an exploder on the threshold of the town hall” that pop up, last for a short time and give a bonus if you complete them.
Some “minigames” could be helpful too, e.g. making the air strike a minigame, if you trigger it the game pauses and you play a short minigame in which you dodge incoming SAMs as the plane and if you don’t get hit you do the bombing run. Camera looks down from the plane and you click on places to send bombs there, slight point bonus if all your bombs hit a target.
Changing the main objective occasionally could also provide changes in scenery as currently the player will mostly stay close to the town hall, if some waves had you protect another building or maybe a wounded soldier that limps towards your town hall you’d have incentives to go to other places for some time.
By KDR_11k on August 5th 2009
Oh, forgot the most obvious addition the game could use: endless survival mode. Simply goes on and on until you lose with waves becoming bigger and bigger.
Also there seems to be a few second freeze every time the game loads a new music, most visibly at the end of the game (victory or loss) but sometimes in the middle as well.
By Randy on August 5th 2009
Great game! I’m having a blast with it, but it needs a couple of more levels.
By Morgan on August 5th 2009
Hi guys im definatey going to purchase this game as soon as i can rack up the dosh. i love the cartoony style of the game and whilst watching had a sudden realisation “wow, this reminds me of boxhead”, followed by another “HOLY SHIT! if theses guys made a box head video game that would be SICK!”. so seens as i cannot contact your directly i would like to make a somewhat odd suggestion that you check out the box head series of games (http://www.crazymonkeygames.com/Boxhead-Series.php) and i emplore you to contact sean cooper and crazy monkey games about a proposed 3d full retail boxhead game as i feel from looking at your work you would be able to pull of the game perfectly without fucking it up ;P. i hope you find my suggestion intrestring and take it onboard.
By mrmassaker on August 5th 2009
It would be nice if it will get a coop feature (for 2 or up to 4 players). of course deathmatch too. and more crazy steam achievements. Maybe a mapeditor would fit perfect.

I would like some new stuff, maybe a helicopter that flies in, you can control the gunner and mow down tons of the enemies?
Also, new maps, both different variants of the desert theme and also new scenarios, like the jungle or and urban environment.
New weapons are a must, sniper rifle, mounted machine gun, a rocketlauncher that fired faster rockets, etc.
Lastly, my mouse is kinda choppy when I play this game. Maybe a smooth mouse movement option?
By Kaboom on August 5th 2009
A very fun and original game! Not only is it and creative, the hilarity of blowing up little cartoon men really made the game for me.
Definitely worth the seven bucks, and especially the five bucks on sale!
The game can only get better from here, hopefully with additions of maps, weapons, and a multiplayer mode.
By Romanian Action Hero on August 6th 2009
Hi there. Does the game have some bosses in it? Thanks!
By Romanian Action Hero on August 6th 2009
Also, why does this game cost 7 EUR for Eurpoean users? It’s not fair, we have to pay 40% more. This is an outrage! Please fix the pricing!
By Father Shadow on August 6th 2009
This game looks great. I’m really looking forward to the updates you guys can crank out. Some suggestions I have: I like the military feel of it, I mean it makes sense, but you should try doing some exotic stuff that will still fit in. Possibly playing on like a different plant perhaps? Your best bets probably the lush moons of Saturn like Titan or Europa (if I remember anything from my Coordinated Science Classes haha). Just experiment with completely different level layouts, the desert seems kinda bland but I understand why; its a desert haha. So yeah, just work with that, some unique weapons could be cool too, like crossbows, or regular bow and arrows for that matter. Or some crazy weapons, like think Ratchet and Clank -esque equipment.
Well thats my two cents haha. Time to go back and play.
By Father Shadow on August 6th 2009
Almost forgot haha, multiplayer would be another nice edition. I personally don’t see a need for deathmatch; I more favor the co-op aspect and collect buckets of blood with a few chums.
A map editor would also work wonders as you could get the modding community to jump in and do some of your work for you haha.
Well anyways, thanks for your time, and I hope you take my comments to heart haha.

Hello!
This Game is very great! First, i love Indie Games. This Game… for this Price is… amazing! More Featurers like Maps, personal difficulty options and especially a Coop Mode!
Good Work Guys!
By Christian on August 6th 2009
Let me just say, bought the game and it;‘s fantastic, the style is great and I love using the minigun. Some new modes and levels would be a nice addition. More specifically a zombie mode and levels like a night version of a map, indoor levels would be cool too.
By Josh on August 6th 2009
Any chances of making this an online death match or team based style of game?. It would be so awesome.
By Jc on August 6th 2009
Dont bother making it a co-op online game… there would be no point ... but deathmatch online mode would be sick.
By Gameslave on August 6th 2009
I just bought this game and love it, the only problem is the amount of level(s). Things that should be added are:
1. Mulitplayer deathmatch, that would be AMAZING. Co-op would be cool.
2.Plenty of new levels of course!
3. New weapons, like a sniper rifle or grenades or something of the like.
4. A map editor. You have seen what the community has made for other games, just imagine maps for this game, it has so much potential!
5. Remember not to listen to EVERYTHING the community says, it ruins some games (TF2).
Can’t wait for the DLC!

Two Words… Simply AMAZING
I dont know what it is, but something keeps on dragging me to play the game. Whatever it is, it sure as hell is doing a good job! The game has some diffrent feel to it, im guessing it is killing cartoon characters and collecting there blood >.<.
Anyway, i am looking forward to the updates as the one map gets a bit repetative. Im also looking forward to some new weapons (mainly a sniper rifle and a shotgun). Despite of how limited the game is at the moment, it was deffinetly worth the 5$
P.s: I picture the enemy as my boss and i collect his blood, MUWAHAHAHAHA… Sorry.
By Froster on August 6th 2009

Please Help
By Brian on August 6th 2009
Oh and i forgot to mention, i have an idea where if u get enough blood, you can go into a “blood craze” temporarily and get double points. Yes i know its a bit far fetched. Oh and the screen would turn red and your temporarily invincible…. hey its a cartoon(ish) game!
To, Foster
im not giving away exactly where it is but summon help and look at everything that drops in the sky.
By ((BB)) Jones on August 6th 2009
I found something wrong with, it’s too addictive! I got all my STEAM achievments in fourty minutes and I’ve played it now for three and a half hours! For new ideas I’ve been thinking and hope these might be some you can throw on the table.
A jungle setting! I know that this would take a while to get everything set up again, but with jungle camo and ruins for the shelter.
Night time! This way I think it would be harder for the player to find his enemies, keep radar on but still be fun.
No radar or warning! Make this for the Veteran mode, you don’t have any radar and no warnings saying
“Exploders are aproching Town Hall.”
That would be interesting.
Longer times! Let the player choose how long it will last, I’m thinking minimum time for five minutes and maximum time twenty minutes.
Multi player! Players can choose to be a Defender or Attacker. I’m thinking mabey six per team?
Anyway keep up the work and hope to see cool new things.

Oioi just thought we should say hello from Trashgames, we also use the old Blender and Unity Engine. We just bought your game of Steam and would like to say nice job, it’s good to see a small team like ourselves cook up something up that’s enjoyable to play and good look at! We hope to see more quality goods from you in the future.
By Skarn on August 6th 2009
This game is just too hot!!
Make a multiplayer version(please made it free for those who already got the single player version) and add levels and the game will be awesome(especially for multiplayer)!
I can’t wait to see add-on content if there is add-on content(i hope there will be, lol)
Long life to Steam where i got the game!
By Keke on August 7th 2009
Bought this from steam yesterday and had great time with it so far. I was kinda disapointed tho there was only one level and realy hoping for new maps, weapons and features.
Suggestions for new guns: sniper rifle, shotgun and grenade.
A multiplayer mode would be awesome and best suggestion from these comments so far in my opinion is to make online multiplayer mode where one team defends and one attacks. Also simple arcade like deathmatch would be nice where you start with pistol and find better weapons hidden on the map (airstrike included).
A feature to modify properties like amount of spawning enemies and how often they spawn, etc. would be nice also
By Froster on August 7th 2009

By Medvebocs on August 7th 2009
Very good game!
But need: co-op, more maps, new weapons, and new enemy types!
By WinterDem0n on August 7th 2009
What this game needs…
1. Co-op campaign (4 players) and online vs. (up to 16 players) [and you should have bots for people with little or no internet]
2.Customization such as hats, bodies, and weapons unlocked by kills or headshots
3.Vehicles, trucks with mounted turrets for online games
By Boomhauer on August 7th 2009
This game is great but it keeps crashing for me.
By Alex on August 7th 2009
I just bought the game and what i see is a simple game with a massive amount of potential. Map editors, new weapons, new maps, hats and more customization would all be greatly appriciated by the community also if it were free for the original buyers(since we were the first to buy the game i think we deserve the free dlc) i strongly suggest co op, oniline deathmatch, sniper, grenades, shotgun, and deffinatly some other scenarios and objectives
By KDR_11k on August 7th 2009
I think it doesn’t matter so much what it gets but that it gets something soon as a proof that free updates are coming. Make a small improvement now to demonstrate the willingness and push the big, time-eating stuff later.

By GonzoRS on August 8th 2009
...MORE MAP’S AND DEATHMATCH.
It is a good lil game,but need’s a DM/CTF/TDM added.
As a single player game this will not hold my attention for long and get dull after a game or two.
With some work i COULD see this be a battlefield heroes beater(well if it was on line).
apart from that this is a good looking game…Good work…you get a A(would have been a A+ bun no online).
~Gonzo~
By GonzoRS on August 8th 2009
As for CO-OP mode that is a big no for me…Just need’s the normal DM/TDM/CTF.
And why so many people saying this idea is new…Um did some people forget battlefield heroes, cartoon, war, shooter.
BFH had the edge at the moment as that is online.
I would play this more if it was multiplayer(No gay co-op mode please that would kill it).
By Mick.158 on August 8th 2009
It was a nice little (and bloody) shooter game, perfectly made for the break. But the DLC could just enhance the experience. How about:
-new “secret” weapons (sniper rifle, grenade launcher)
-new and harder achievements and fix the old ones
-at least 2 more levels (maybe with 2 bases to defend?)
-multiplayer: Coop or attacker vs defender
(someone plays the legionair and all other play the rebels)
By KDR_11k on August 8th 2009
Hm, legionnair vs rebels as an MP mode has potential… Whoever frags the Legionnair or manages to run into the town hall becomes the new one. The Legionnair scores points by killing people of course. There might be something needed to prevent the rebels from just headshotting the Legionnair though. Overall I’m not holding out for MP though, that’s a pretty radical departure from what’s already there.
Heh, maybe just for lulz a dual wielding mode for people who have two mice connected to their PC, one mouse works normally while the other has a cursor on the screen that’s the second aiming point.
But really, what it needs first is probably an endless mode.
By Scratch on August 8th 2009
I didn’t even see a warning for pc users and it works on mine. Er, in the startup window in which you set the resolution and graphics level there’s an input tab that lets you rebind the keys.
Nothing: The game is so short there’s no way to make a demo of it.
By @ngelo on August 9th 2009
Hey there!
Fantastic game, saw it a couple of days back in mupromo.com, and purchased it after a few minutes of gameplay! Dead cheap price, a bargain compared with what you get! :-)
Now, we definitely need more maps, and an on-line feature! SDKs would be a good idea, so that everybody could create & upload new maps and maybe weapons!
Also, you need to fix the issue with logitech mice. I’ve got an MX cordless, and I can’t change weapons through the weel. Also, when I change weapons through the trackpad, I have to disconnect & reconnect the mouse for it to work properly!
Thumbs up mates, we are all waiting for the upcoming updates!
Cheers,
Angelo

Hey Guys! Loved the game, tons of fun! But to be honest, I can see myself getting bored with it after a while because of the one map. I know I am repeating just about everyone one above me, and I know that you have stated you are planning on updates… so I was wondering, might they be coming soon, or maybe we could get an idea of you guys at Sakari Indie are planning/working on? Other than that… It ran flawlessly for me on my MacBook Pro. I give major props, and look forward to anyupdates that will be coming in the hopefully near future.
Thanks!!

That’s pretty odd. We’ve got the game running fine in Snow Leopard ourselves. Could you send us a log file of the game? You can find this on your Mac at /Users/YourName/Library/Logs/Unity
This will help us look for a solution on why the game is refusing to start on your system.
